What is Global Developmental Delay (GDD)? 

It is a broad term that refers to a child who has significantly lower intellectual functionality than their peers. For a child to be diagnosed with GDD, he or she must be notably limited in at least two developmental aspects. This includes vision and fine motor, gross motor, social skills, as well as speech and language communication skills.

Children who fall under this category are usually caused by genetic abnormalities in the development of the brain and spinal cord. This mostly takes place in events such as premature birth, infections and other environmental factors.


Signs and symptoms of global developmental delay: 

  • Trouble solving problems

  • Delay in gross and fine motor skills

  • Struggles to communicate and socialise with others

  • Delay in Speech and Language Development

  • Inability to do basic tasks according to each milestone 

  • Slower learning and development as compared to children of the same age 

  • Below average IQ scores causing limited reasoning or conceptual abilities
